Clinical Seminars are offered each year by seasoned NWAPS clinicians who talk about the course of their work, highlighting struggles, successes and growth over the course of their careers with clinical material and case examples.
One of the things I have enjoyed most in over 40 years of clinical social work practice is thinking together with colleagues about ‘what is going on’…what is going on with the patient and perhaps, more importantly. What is going on in the therapist. In this process of playing together we are likely to encounter theory (I love theory & have studied and taught many, psychoanalytic and others) to attend to countertransference and to be disturbed and challenged to think in new and different ways. My psychoanalytic elders and colleagues tell me that I listen well before I speak (most of the time). So, I envision sitting with five or six other people who want to think and feel together about ‘what going on’ and in this small encounter do something that makes this world, our world, a little more just for everyone.
