NPSI Scientific Meeting: Unconscious Phantasy, Part 1 by Jeffrey L Eaton, MA, FIPA

The topic of Unconscious Phantasy is central to understanding the theoretical models developed by Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, Donald Meltzer, and many analysts in the British object relations tradition. In 2017 the International Journal of Psychoanalysis devoted several articles to exploring this theme (Int J Psychoanal 2017 98: 779-859). In the spirit of fostering community conversation devoted to key concepts in psychoanalysis, our December, February, March, and spring meetings will offer detailed explorations of Unconscious Phantasy drawing on the IJP articles and other sources. Presenters will include Jeffrey Eaton, MA, FIPA, Judy K Eekhoff, PhD, FIPA, and Maxine Anderson, MD, FIPA. Presentations will include reviews of articles and discussions with the audience as well as the presenter's own reflections on the articles and topics.

Meetings will stand on their own, but also comprise a series that when combined are intended to provide a deepened and multi-perspective view into how Unconscious Phantasy is currently understood and used within the Klein-Bion tradition. The series will culminate in a panel discussion in a spring meeting (date to be determined).

In December, Jeffrey Eaton will review and lead a discussion of papers by David Bell and Heinz Weiss. Readings will be available prior to the meeting for those who preregister.
