"Using Theater and Group Process to Promote Mutual Recognition and Communal Wellbeing”

This two-day conference combines play reading, interactive theater, and small group processes to identify and explore alternatives that have the potential to generate mutual recognition and communal wellbeing in our private and civic lives.

Using themes illuminated in a dramatic play reading as inspiration, Interactive theater and Theatre of the Oppressed practices will be used to identify and explore desired changes—within our therapy groups and our own lives. Interactive theater brings us into embodied dialogue and reflective practices, allowing us to learn in the here-and- now about ourselves, and the lived experiences of others. We will search together for hidden, but accessible perspectives that might show us the way. Robert Schulte, MSW, CGP is a clinical social worker in private practice in Alexandria, Virginia. He is the founding director of the Red Well Theater Group of Washington, D.C. and a faculty member of the National Group Psychotherapy Institute at the Washington School of Psychiatry.

Tikka Sears is a theater director, performer, and teaching artist. Artistic director of Memory War Theater, she spent two years in Indonesia as a Fulbright recipient and artist-in- residence and frequently collaborates with the Black Umbrella Theater. Tikka is the co-founder and co-director of Theater for Change at the University of Washington, Center for Teaching and Learning.
