Psychoanalytic Scholar, Writer and Clinical Professor Carter J. Carter Ph.D LICSW will present a chapter from his upcoming book in conversation with Seattle- based scholar, writer, activist Ijeoma Oluo, who will present her work from her 2024 book Be A Revolution, on abolitionism as stance of activism and resistance against the forms of oppression maintained by a society invested in carceral systems.
Presenters: Carter Carter is, in no particular order: the lead labor organizer for Massachusetts' union of state university professors and librarians; Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts; Lecturer in the School of Social Policy and Practice, and Affiliated Faculty in the Psychoanalytic Studies Program, at the University of Pennsylvania; the author of a small-town newspaper recipe column, Larder Ardor with Carter Carter; an editor on the boards of Studies in Gender & Sexuality and Psychoanalysis, Culture & Society; the owner of two small businesses, including a private practice in psychotherapy and clinical supervision and a farm; and the author of a number of psychoanalytic articles and a forthcoming book, "Bound to Lose: How Fascism Came for Psychoanalysis."
Ijeoma Oluo is a Seattle-based writer, speaker, and internet yeller. She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling first book, So You Want To Talk About Race, Mediocre, and Be a Revolution. Her work on race and gender has been published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and NBC News; and she has been featured on The Daily Show and NPR’s All Things Considered. Named on the TIME 100 Next list and The Root 100, she’s been awarded the Harvard Humanist of the Year Award, the American Humanist Association’s Feminist Humanist Award, Gender Justice League’s Media Justice Award, and the Equal Opportunity Institute’s Aubrey Davis Visionary Leadership Award.
Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to define the terms “fascist", “antifascist", "anarchist", “abolitionist", “decolonial", and “carceral system".
2. Participants will be able to describe two examples of how clinicians create change for intersectional racial equity in psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
3. Participants will be able to identify major themes in fascist propaganda produced by clinicians, with an eye towards identifying clinical misinformation and disinformation.
4. Participants will be able to identify key ethical dilemmas in clinical practice from an anarchist perspective.
