The SPSI Art Salon Committee presents the third and final installment in our series “The Impact on the Psyche of Not Belonging: The Recognition and Non-Recognition of Women Artists”. This event is FREE, in person at SPSI. Pre-registration is encouraged due to space limitations.

Kara Walker is among the most complex and prolific American artists of her generation. She has gained national and international recognition for her cut-paper silhouettes depicting historical narratives haunted by sexuality, violence, and subjugation. Walker has also used drawing, painting, text, shadow puppetry, film, and sculpture to expose the ongoing psychological injury caused by the tragic legacy of slavery. Her work leads viewers to a critical understanding of the past while also proposing an examination of contemporary racial and gender stereotypes. Our program will include short films by and about Kara Walker, including:
• Six Miles from Springfield on the Franklin Road (2009)
• Lucy of Pulaski (2009)

The SPSI Art Salon Committee's programs, which began in 2007, serve as a bridge between the Institute and the greater Seattle community by inviting artists to present their work, or presenting and discussing their work. We explore the interface of art and psychoanalysis as it deepens our understanding of creativity, aesthetics, and psychological and artistic processes. In collaboration with the artist, and through shared stories, dialogue, and discussion, we seek to highlight, to learn, and to challenge our beliefs about race, equity, gender, sexuality, and the environment.
