On June 7th, Distinguished Speakers presents our PRIDE Event of the year!

This program, when participated in its entirety, is available for 3 continuing education credits.  Division 39 is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.  Division 39 maintains responsibility for this program and its content. This presentation also meets the requirements of WAC 246-809-620 (definition of recognized categories of continuing education for licensed mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists and social workers).

We have invited two queer theory luminaries to dialog and explore with us the relationship between psychoanalytic theory, trans and LGBTQ experiences, and today’s political climate. Please celebrate PRIDE with us in the company of Dr. Grace Lavery, professor of literature, academic scholar and writer, and Dr. Julie Leavitt, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst in Northern California.

Presenters:

Dr. Grace Lavery, adept in Lacanian critical theory, explores trans realism, psychoanalysis, and makes the case that transexual people are related to culturally and politically as being “possessed” by a figure sexed differently than the body they inhabit, which in turn excludes transexual people from the civil rights afforded to gay and lesbian people.

Julie Leavitt MD, is enthusiastic about queering psychoanalysis and discovering what it means to be “a subversive rebel of the popular order.” Her current interests include queering analytic writing and dialogue with experimental literary forms, community whiteness/anti-racism work, Transitional Place as geographic palimpsest, and gun violence as a prototype symptom for understanding US cultural history and present social/political cataclysm.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will be able to describe how literature and critical theory challenges the bounds of psychoanalytic scholarship in order to further both theory and pragmatic political concerns for sexuality and gender freedom.
  2. Participants will be able to define trans realism and describe implications of trans realism that can improve competence in working with the cultural imagination of LGBTQ+ populations in clinical practice.
  3. Participants will be able to describe a connection between psychoanalytic literature on sexuality with LGBTQ+ political issues, with specific emphasis on the importance of civil rights, autonomy, and security.
  4. Participants will be able to identify and describe the application of a queer feminist perspective in the clinical setting and in psychoanalytic literature.
