Working Therapeutically Across the Boundaries of Ethnic, Political, and Religious Differences with Aisha Abbasi, MD

In Person or Virtual

In this presentation, Dr. Abbasi will explore the complexities that arise when therapists/analysts and patients come from vastly different ethnic, cultural, religious, and political backgrounds. While similarities in a therapeutic relationship can present challenges, differences often give rise to rich transference and countertransference dynamics and potential treatment impasses. Through detailed clinical examples, Dr. Abbasi will illustrate how a candid examination of these differences can significantly enhance the therapeutic process. She will also discuss how reflecting on her countertransference enables her to facilitate open conversations about this topic, ultimately leading to deeper insights into her patients' lives. This exploration fosters understanding and enriches the therapeutic journey for both therapists/analysts and patients.

Learning Objectives:
Describe and apply culturally sensitive ways to effectively build rapport and address potential misunderstandings about certain realities when working with patients from diverse backgrounds.

Evaluate how sociopolitical contexts (e.g., systemic oppression, discrimination, political trauma) can impact a patient’s presenting concerns and therapeutic goals and identify appropriate interventions to help patients understand the role these factors might have in shaping their intrapsychic struggles.
