Working with Suicidal Clients: December Workshop

Beginning January 1, 2014, mental health professionals licensed in the State of Washington* are required to complete six hours of training in suicide assessment, treatment, and management based on the Matt Adler Suicide Assessment, Treatment & Management Act that was signed into law in 2012 by Governor Christine Gregoire.

You are invited to become more confident in your work with suicidal clients and be in compliance with this new law by attending one of Wellspring Counseling's nine Seattle 2015 workshops. New for 2015: Workshops in Renton, Spokane and Kennewick.

Literature and Therapy

We will read from Sandra Buechler’s book "Understanding and Treating Patients in Clinical Psychoanalysis" (2015). Using examples from literary works, Buechler grapples with what it means to live with such challenges as paranoia, grief, shame, narcissism, and more. Buechler gives the reader illustrations of complex human conditions followed by a discussion of how we, as clinicians, can sufficiently meet human suffering in our practice. What do our clients need from us?

Body Rhythms and the Unconscious: Toward an Expanding of Clinical Attention

The Seattle School is excited to partner with the Northwest Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study to host an evening lecture with Dr. Steven Knoblauch. Each year, The Seattle School and the Northwest Alliance work together to host clinicians and thought leaders who are contributing innovative, compelling work to the fields of psychology and therapy.

Exploring the Impact of Religious Paradigms and Belief Systems on Early Development

Reading selections from Robert Stolorow’s autobiographical book, "Trauma and Human Existence," the group will explore and expand upon these concepts as well as attempt to translate his ideas to the developmental experience of growing up within a religious culture full of absolutes and dichotomous thinking, such as believers/non-believers, saved/ not saved, etc. For example, we will discuss questions like, how is a child’s ability to safely play and to relate with others impacted when they are taught that their friends are going to hell?

Symbol Formation and Therapeutic Action: Discovering the symbols in your patient's material

Our goal as depth psychotherapy practitioners is to help clients bring unconscious material into conscious awareness. Because unconscious material is always in symbolic form, it is essential that we are able to perceive what seems to be concrete in our client's narrative as symbolic. It's not always an easy task! This study group is an opportunity for us to not only expand our theoretical understanding of symbolic formation, but also practice interpreting the concrete into the symbolic. We will be reading Winnicott, Segal, and Lacan.
