Scholarly Dialogues--formerly called Masterclass, is an open discussion and learning session where small groups gather together with important scholars in the field to discuss 1-2 papers from their body of work. The intimacy of the setting allows participants to be able to ask personal questions about the author's ideas and share some of their own reactions and thinking about the material. Papers will be distributed in advance to registered attendees.
The Masculine Vaginal: Working with Queer Men’s Embodiment at the Transgender Edge
Join Griffin Hansbury for a reading of his paper, “The Masculine Vaginal: Working with Queer Men’s Embodiment at the Transgender Edge.” This presentation explores the psychic and somatic dimensions of queer men’s embodiment, focusing on how transgender phenomena unsettle conventional understandings of masculinity and receptivity.
Following the reading, the group will engage in a dialogue about cisgender countertransference—the conscious and unconscious responses that surface when clinicians encounter trans embodiment and presence itself: both in the consulting room and in their reactions to trans material such as this paper. The conversation will invite reflection on how these responses shape practice, and participants are welcome to bring clinical material for consultation and discussion.

Griffin Hansbury, LCSW-R
Griffin Hansbury, LCSW-R, is a psychoanalyst in private practice in New York City. His analytic writing on trans phenomenology has appeared in several journals, including the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA), Psychoanalytic Dialogues, and Studies in Gender and Sexuality. His paper “The Masculine Vaginal: Working with Queer Men’s Embodiment at the Transgender Edge” received the Ralph Roughton Paper Award and has been translated and published internationally.
In addition to his analytic work, Griffin is an author of fiction and creative non-fiction, including the Stonewall Award-winning novel Some Strange Music Draws Me In, as well as (under his pen name, Jeremiah Moss) Feral City and Vanishing New York. His writing has appeared in numerous publications, including n+1, the New York Times, the New Yorker, and the Paris Review.

Cancellations must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the event to receive a refund, minus an administrative fee of $50.

Continuing Education: This program is available for 2.50 continuing education credits. Participants must attend 100% of the program.
