In this two hour event you will hear Lore Reich Rubin present and discuss her paper, Willhelm Reich's Changing Theories on Childrearing. This article begins in 1929 tracing the development of the group home movement (where even young children were removed from their families ideally sharing all possessions, and without physical demonstrations of love) and Reich’s emotional development leading to his advocacy of this model. This also included his developing quarrel with Freud that included the universality of the Oedipus Complex. The paper then traces his drastic change of opinion in 1944, to advocating a strong attachment to the mother, beginning in the womb.  Additionally Reich’s view on childhood sexuality evolved from encouragement of curiosity to a strong demand that children explore their sexuality. Despite this unique point of view, his general beliefs in childrearing were part of the cultural ethos of his time as seen by the Soviet Union, through Europe and to Jewish Palestine (now Israel) use of the group home model.
